There are tons of third party Twitter software and apps. Image by futileboy via Flickr
As you’ve read here before, Twitter is currently at odds with third-party companies that produce software and apps that use Twitter’s platform. This is kind of a bummer because these apps are what I think make Twitter great.
(And, yes, I realize I used the word Twitter a lot in the title of this post. Get over it.)
Tech Talk Podcast on the New York Times’ website goes into great detail regarding the issues. Here is just a quick tease:
Twitter has been buying companies that produce apps for Twitter or developing the apps on its own, which has raised questions about how the company treats competitors.
If you have time check out the whole show, because it goes into a lot more detail than I’m willing to get into right now. It’s more for listeners and less for readers. And, since the New York times now charges for online content, you get to miss out on a great, in-depth article surrounding the topic.
Anyway, the discussion by the New York Times is slightly different than an article on the San Francisco Chronicle entitled “Twitter Builds New Bridge to Growing App Developer Community.” In the post, author states:
Twitter Inc. on Monday launched a new site to better communicate with its growing universe of 750,000 app developers. It’s an interesting move, especially with reports that federal investigators are looking into the relationships between the company and those developers.
So, I guess the relationship might not be as hostile as the Times was reporting. Then again, like the Chronicle says, this whole thing may be nothing more than a ploy to help keep the FTC off Twitter’s back.
What do you think? Do you use third party Twitter software and Twitter apps? Leave your comments below and, as always, please share this post using the social sharing buttons below – especially Facebook and, you guessed it, Twitter.
